What is the cochlea?
The cochlea is a small spiral organ that is made of hollow bone.

So when the stapes pushes against the cochlea, it creates waves of fluid that travel around inside.
And here is the most important part:
The walls of the cochlea are lined with tiny filaments called stereocilia.
So the stereocilia move around in the waves of fluid, like seaweed in the ocean current.
What is the purpose of stereocilia?
The stereocilia are basically like motion sensors.
They are the part of the ear that are responsible for turning physical sound waves into electrical impulses to send to your brain.
So as they move around in the waves of fluid, they create tiny electrical charges and that’s how your brain understands sound.
They are also so accurate that they can detect movement as small as the distance of one atom.
So why do we lose hearing as we age?
The stereocilia are responsible for converting the sound into brain signals. And over time, these tiny filaments break and become damaged.
But here’s the problem;
they don’t regrow.
Unlike most other cells, they are not genetically programmed to regrow.
So you just have less and less stereocilia over time which means your brain is getting less and less information.
