As these hair cells move around in the waves of fluid, that is converted into electrical signals that are sent to your brain to be processed as sound information.
How do we tell the difference between all the sounds we hear when someone speaks?
Different sounds have different frequencies and speeds.
And human speech is made up of a lot of tiny sounds pushed together, like in a simple word
“cat”
Your mouth basically makes three different sounds to create this word;
c, a, t
When you say them separately,
you can hear that the ‘c’ and ‘t’ are a lot higher frequency than the ‘a’
And the hair cells in your cochlea respond to different frequencies depending on their position in the cochlea.
Higher frequencies are picked up near the opening and lower frequencies are in the center of the spiral.
So the hair cells act like a filter that splits up words into the different frequencies of the sounds used to create that word
And what happens inside our brain?
As we learn language, starting as a tiny baby, our brains learn that certain patterns of sounds are a specific word.
So now, when you hear the sounds
‘c’ ‘a’ ‘t’
in order, you don’t need to think about it, you just automatically know that this is “cat”
And your brain also connects the word “cat” to its meaning and the other words and ideas we associate with cat.
This is how you can process speech so quickly.
Your brain builds this network of neurons that instantly recognize collections of sounds as words so you can understand instantly what is being said.
So what happens when we have hearing loss?
The first problem is in your ear.
The hair cells are responsible for converting the sound into brain signals. And over time, these tiny filaments break and become damaged.
But here’s the problem;
they don’t regrow.
Unlike most other cells, they are not genetically programmed to regrow.
So you just have less and less hair cells over time which means your brain is getting less and less information.
And most people lose the higher frequency hair cells first
This is because the higher frequency hair cells have less protection at the opening and are hit by stronger sound waves so they break more easily.
The lower frequency hair cells get more protection at the center of the cochlea.
